Thank you for your support in this strange, strange year.
I joke that I should’ve known better when I decided to restart this newsletter — again — after losing my publishing job — again — in May 2019. In about 15 years in media, I’ve been laid off three times, yet I keep coming back for more. After my layoff last May, I couldn’t imagine a worse thing happening. This year proved me wrong, of course, as I sat in the front row watching the industry I love, the industry that helped me build my own journalism career, all but collapse.
I find inspiration in stories of resilience and success amid the most challenging conditions of our lifetimes. I find inspiration in new technology and the rate of adoption by businesses that were previously resistant to change. I’m still hoping to strike that perfect balance of reporting on the promise of tech without holding it up as a universal standard by which all restaurants should operate. It’s a dance!
