Don’t miss out! Expedite shares top news and analysis that’s shaping the future of restaurants.

DoorDash, the third-party delivery service, is testing a restaurant reservations feature in New York. The company quietly added a “reservations” option to the top of its app, sandwiched between the “alcohol” and “pets” categories. A DoorDash representative confirmed it’s a pilot program, declining to provide further details including whether the program is or will be made available outside of New York.

If you’re in the city (or general vicinity, it seems), clicking “reservations” leads to a map of participating New York restaurants. Clicking on a restaurant listing displays options, generally: delivery, pickup, and reserve table. “Reserve” leads to a pretty standard bookings page (party size / date / time). The final page lists details and prompts users to complete the booking with a big, DoorDash-style red button at the bottom — all without leaving the DoorDash app.

Wow, why?
